MILWAUKEE, WI — A 19-year-old driver has been charged following a crash on Sunday, January 8, that fatally injured a 32-year-old woman and her unborn child, reports WISN.

The collision took place in the area of Brown Deer Road and Servite Drive, at about 4:26 p.m.

The criminal complaint indicates the suspect, Akol Riak, was driving a white Chevy Equinox on Brown Deer Road at 86 miles per hour when a Dodge Caravan turned left in his path in order to get onto northbound Servite Drive.

Riak told authorities he was unable to stop his vehicle in time, and the brake was found to have been applied only .5 seconds before the crash.

All four of the Caravan’s occupants–32-year-old Monique Stewart, the 62-year-old driver, a 21-year-old, and two children aged 8–were transported to a local hospital. Stewart, who was pregnant, succumbed to her injuries, Doctors worked to deliver her baby early by C-section, but the child was also ultimately pronounced deceased.

All four of the van’s other occupants survived their injuries.
