MILWAUKEE, WI — A 34-year-old man has been formally charged after a crash Wednesday, October 4, in Milwaukee’s Harambee area that claimed the life of a 40-year-old woman, reports FOX 6 Milwaukee.
The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of East Locust Street and North Hubbard Street. Milwaukee Police responded to the scene at around 11:30 p.m.
According to the criminal complaint, dispatchers had received reports that a Saturn had collided with and wrapped around a tree, leaving its occupants trapped.
Officers arrived to find bystanders around the wreckage of which the woman was a passenger. The victim, who has since been identified as Julie Collins, succumbed to blunt force injuries suffered in the crash.
The driver, identified as Deangelo Wallace, was found laying on the sidewalk. Although he claimed to have only been driving at 15 miles per hour at the time, investigators say the extent of damage to the vehicle, 130-feet long tire marks, and a witness account demonstrate a high-speed impact. The Saturn is believed to have rotated counter-clockwise as it ran towards the tree and struck it.
The witness told authorities the Saturn, who had been swerving between lanes while traveling eastbound, was following her car too closely when he tried to move from the right lane into the left lane with very little room. Shortly after the witness hit the brakes and the horn, the Saturn lost control and hit the tree.
Wallace was expected to make his first court appearance in Milwaukee County on Wednesday, October 11. He faces criminal counts of “Homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle,” and “Knowingly operate motor vehicle while suspended – cause death.”
