MILWAUKEE, WI — A woman has been charged after being involved a pair of crashes last Thursday in northwest Milwaukee that left a pedestrian seriously hurt, reports TMJ4.
The initial crash occurred at a residence in the area of West Florist Avenue and North 36th Street. at around 10:30 p.m.
Milwaukee Police said the woman, 24-year-old Latayja Hargraves, had driven to the home of a 42-year-old man she had been dating and began breaking his car windows with a metal object when he refused to let her into the home. When the man emerged to try to stop her, she began hitting him in the face and body with the object.
Officers arrived on the scene and observed the woman, who had gotten into her car with five children onboard, accelerate over a curb and over the lawn before hitting the man with the vehicle. The man was thrown into the air and landed on the vehicle’s hood. As Hargraves backed up, the man fell onto the roadway.
Hargraves then sped away from the scene, prompting a police pursuit. During the chase, the fleeing driver ran multiple stop signs and a red light, and at one point, collided with two vehicles at an intersection. The crash left all three vehicles totaled and a traffic light destroyed.
Officials said Hargraves, who was taken into custody, displayed signs of intoxication at the scene.
All five children, ages 2 to 9, were found without seat belts on, but only one child suffered injuries.
Hargraves faces as many as 11 charges, which include “five counts of neglecting a child, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing from police, and criminal property damage.” She is currently being held on a $20,000 bond and is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on July 5. She could face up to 90 years in prison and a $200,000 fine if convicted of all charges.
