MILWAUKEE, WI — A 21-year-old man has been charged after a stolen vehicle he was driving Friday, June 2, dragged an MCSO deputy for nearly 30 feet before fleeing the scene in Milwaukee’s Northpoint, reports TMJ4.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred in the parking lot at Lake Park, near Bradford Beach, just after 11:04 a.m.

Preliminary details indicated a Flock License Plate Recognition camera had alerted deputies to a stolen vehicle in the area. As they arrived at the parking lot 10 minutes later and attempted to pull over the vehicle.

According to a criminal complaint, one deputy approached the vehicle and opened the driver’s side door while asking the driver to exit. The suspect then placed the vehicle in reverse, catching the deputy on the door as the vehicle continued to back out of the lot at a high rate of speed.

The deputy, who was dragged for nearly 30 feet before rolling onto the concrete ground, had to quickly move out of the way to avoid being run over by the vehicle as it fled the scene. She was later taken to a local hospital with minor injuries

The stolen vehicle, which had also struck a parked pickup truck as it sped away, was later found vacant in the area of Cambridge and Providence, near the Milwaukee River.

On Wednesday, June 7, the suspect, Dedric Demond Vaughns Jr., was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at his residence. A stolen firearm, THC, and assorted magazines and cartridges were recovered in the home.

Officials said a $25,000 cash bond has been set. Vaughns is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on June 20. He faces up to 18.5 years in prison and a fine of $35,000 if convicted.

A passenger, 19-year-old Franklin Easley, who had exited the stolen vehicle and was arrested prior to the dragging incident, was also charged with “one count of carrying a concealed weapon.”
