RACINE COUNTY, WI — An 18-year-old man has been formally charged after a wreck last Tuesday that killed an 18-year-old pregnant woman in Racine, reports CBS58.
The fatal collision occurred in the area of Mead Street and 18th Street on February 28. Racine Police were called to the scene just after 10:30 p.m.
According to authorities, the teen driver was behind the wheel of an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle struck a pothole, lost control, and hit at least one parked car.
First responders arrived to find an 18-year-old female passenger in the backseat unresponsive and pronounced her deceased at the scene. A criminal complaint revealed her unborn baby, who was 27 weeks pregnant at the time, also did not survive.
Of the three other occupants in the GMC, which included a 20-year-old man, an 18-year-old man, and another 18-year-old woman, two were taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
The teen driver, who was arrested of suspected intoxication, was subjected to a blood test that revealed a BAC level of .136. He admitted to having consumed beer before driving the SUV.
As of this writing, the suspect faces at least five charges, including “knowingly operate motor vehicle without a valid license – causing death,” “homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle,” “homicide intoxicated use of a vehicle – unborn child,” “intoxicated use of a vehicle – great bodily harm,” and “operating while intoxicated causing injury – 1st offense (two counts).” His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 8.
