MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — Two people died and four people were left injured after a large passenger van overturned and caught fire on Interstate 43 near Greenfield, according to GMToday.

The fatal accident happened on the eastbound interstate (I-894) near Exit 9 to South 27th Street, at the Mitchell Interchange. It was first reported at around 5:15 a.m.

It remains unclear what caused the wreck, but the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said the passenger van, initially described as a bus, was carrying six people. At one point, the van overturned, caught fire, and quickly became fully engulfed in flames.

Multiple witnesses stopped and helped pull the occupants out of the van. The Good Samaritans and responding deputies worked to stabilize the victims before rushing them to a local hospital.

Officials confirmed two people have died as a result of their injuries. The conditions of the other four patients have not been disclosed.

No further details have been released, but the MCSO noted the transport van is owed by CNH Industrial, which is based in Minnesota. The van was used as a shuttle transporting employees to work in Racine County.

An investigation was underway.
