RACINE COUNTY, WI — A single-vehicle crash early Saturday near downtown Racine claimed the life of a 78-year-old male driver, according to TMJ4.
The accident happened on the 200 block of Dodge Street, just outside of Chartroom Restaurant, at around 12:30 a.m.
A preliminary investigation by the Racine County Sheriff’s Office indicates the victim crashed his minivan into a nearby retaining wall, causing the vehicle to become airborne and then become submerged in the Root River.
Crews with the South Shore Fire Department’s Dive Team, the Sheriff’s Dive Team, and the Racine Fire Department’s Dive Team all worked in an effort to recover the sunken vehicle from the body of water.
The Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that the male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle had died from his injuries.
An investigation by the RCSO remains open and ongoing.
