MILWAUKEE, WI — Two Milwaukee Police Department officers were hurt early New Year’s Day in downtown Milwaukee due to a crash involving a suspected impaired driver, reports WISN.

The incident occurred in the area of East Highland Avenue and North Water Street, a couple of blocks west of Milwaukee School of Engineering. It was first reported just before 1:30 a.m.

According to the MPD, a 27-year-old woman slammed her vehicle through road closure barricades and then struck a squad car occupied by two officers.

Footage taken at the scene following the crash shows debris on the roadway and the striking car’s reverse lights on. The squad car’s front bumper also appears to be torn off.

Authorities said both officers were transported to an area hospital. While the severity of their condition remains unclear, one officer can be heard complaining about a neck injury in MPD body camera video.

The causing driver was taken into custody for an investigation into Operating While Intoxicated.
