OUTAGAMIE COUNTY, WI — One person died and two others were left injured following a two-vehicle wreck near Grand Chute, reports NBC26.

The fatal collision occurred on a stretch of Bluemound Drive, about a block from the Fleet Farm department store, where the decedent was reportedly involved in retail theft at about 2:10 p.m.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, after being approached by Grand Chute Police at the business, the suspect sped away in a vehicle. Authorities said the fleeing vehicle was only a block from the store when it collided with a second, uninvolved car, and then a tree, on Bluemound Drive.

First responders pronounced one person deceased at the scene.

Two people from the other vehicle were transported to an area hospital for unspecified injuries.

A span of Bluemound Drive was shut down for nearly five hours during the emergency response and investigation.

Since the fatal incident involved an officer, that officer was placed on administrative leave, in keeping with agency policy. The Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) and the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are handling the investigation.
