MARINETTE COUNTY, WIS — A two-vehicle wreck involving a dump truck Monday evening in the Town of Goodman claimed the life of a 69-year-old man, reports WBAY.
The Marinette County Sheriff said the fatal crash happened on a stretch of U.S. Highway 8, just east of Tower Road. Dispatchers were alerted about a person trapped inside one of the vehicles at around 5:21 p.m.
Preliminary details show that John Benzow, a Goodman resident, had failed to yield to the right-of-way as his vehicle began pulling onto westbound US-8. Moments later, his car collided with an eastbound dump truck that was partially loaded.
Benzow, who was found to have been wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased by a medical examiner shortly after.
The driver of the truck, 65-year-old Randy C. Peterson, a resident of Loretto, Michigan, was not reported hurt. Officials noted he was also wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
An investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Marinette County medical examiner remains ongoing, but “failure to yield the right of way” was determined to be a factor in the accident.
