RACINE COUNTY, WI — A woman was flown to a hospital Wednesday afternoon after a school bus she was driving colliding with a city bus in northwest Racine, according to TMJ4.

The wreck occurred in the area of Shoop Street and Goold Street, a few blocks northeast of William Horlick High School, at about 3:30 p.m.

Details remain limited, but an investigation will determine whether a tree branch covering a stop sign may have been a factor in the crash. Authorities said the female driver and her driver’s assistant were the only occupants of the school bus, as they had just dropped off the last student on the route. At one point, the school bus ran a stop sign that was blocked by the branch, and was involved in a crash with a Racine Transit bus.

Multiple agencies, including Flight for Life, responded to the scene. The city bus driver, who is believed to have suffered a serious leg injury after being trapped in her seat behind the bus’ mangled front end, was transported by airlift to Froedtert Hospital.

RYDE, the company that operates the city bus, indicated that “others” on the bus may have also been injured in the crash, but did not confirm the number of people transported to a hospital.

An investigation remains ongoing.
