RACINE COUNTY, WI — A CPD officer was injured Saturday afternoon when his squad car was struck by another vehicle in the Village of Caledonia, according to TMJ4.
The wreck took place on a span of Douglas Avenue (Wisconsin State Highway 32) near Harvest Lane, shortly after 2:30 p.m.
Officials with the Village of Caledonia Police Department said the officer was trying to follow and pull over a vehicle that was going 90 miles per hour in a 45mph zone. Several vehicles yielded to his squad car when he activated the vehicle’s lights and sirens. At one point, a white SUV heading in the same direction tried to make a left turn in the squad’s path, resulting in a collision.
The officer, who was pulled out of the squad by good Samaritans after the vehicle flipped onto its roof in a ditch, suffered minor injuries. Authorities said flames had begun appearing in the engine compartment and was quickly moving to the rest of the vehicle, which eventually became engulfed in fire.
No injuries to the driver or passenger of the white SUV has been reported.
Due to the officer’s involvement in the crash, the investigation is being handled by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
