OZAUKEE COUNTY, WI — A juvenile was fatally injured early Sunday when a vehicle collided with a tree in southeast Mequon, according to TMJ4.
The single-vehicle wreck took place in the 9800 block of North River Road, shortly before 2:00 a.m. Mequon Police and crew members with the Southern Ozaukee Fire Department responded to the scene shortly after, with assistance from multiple area agencies.
A preliminary investigation indicates an 18-year-old man was driving northbound on the road when he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of his vehicle. Moments later, the vehicle veered past the center line and hit a tree on the roadway’s west side.
First responders arrived to find a juvenile passenger critically injured. Despite life-saving measures at the crash site, the victim succumbed to their injuries.
The teen driver, who was located walking on the roadway a short distance away from the scene, was arrested and taken to a local hospital to be observed and treated for minor injuries. He has since been booked into Ozaukee County Jail and faces charges under review by the Ozaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
An investigation by the Mequon/Ozaukee County Crash Reconstruction Unit remains underway, but officials say speed and alcohol appear to have been contributing factors in the crash.
