FOND DU LAC COUNTY, WI — A 22-year-old man was hospitalized late Wednesday night after a rollover semi-truck crash on Wisconsin State Highway 23 in Fond du Lac, reports WBAY.
Local police said the incident occurred on the WIS-23 (E. Johnson Street) roundabout at the Wisconsin American Drive intersection, an area just east of U.S. Highway 151.
Authorities said that shortly before midnight, the young man was navigating the semi on the roundabout when the vehicle overturned onto its driver’s side. The victim, who sustained a compound arm fracture that resulted in heavy blood loss. A responding officer was able to apply a tourniquet and administer life-saving measures. The patient was transported to a Fond du Lac hospital before being airlifted to a Neenah hospital.
All westbound traffic on WIS-23 was closed as crews worked to ensure all material in the trailer was unloaded and not hazardous. The roadway reopened by Thursday morning.
Investigators have determined that “excessive speed” and a lack of familiarity with the area and roundabout on the driver’s part were contributing factors in the wreck.
