GREEN BAY, WI — A 23-year-old man has been formally charged after a hit-and-run crash Tuesday afternoon that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Green Bay, according to NBC26.

The fatal incident occurred at the corner of West Mason Street and 16th Avenue.

A witness told Green Bay Police that a gray BMW sped past him at high speed. At one point, the vehicle was seen failing to slow down or brake before it struck a 73-year-old woman who was crossing the roadway. The impact of the crash sent the female pedestrian about 10 feet into the air before she struck the ground. Authorities said her prescription glasses were found about 90 feet away from her on the ground.

First responders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver fled the scene but was taken into custody just minutes after the crash. He was then taken to a hospital for field sobriety tests, where his preliminary breath test read 0.222. At this time, he faces multiple charges, including “homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle” and “hit and run resulting in death.”

The suspect, who made his first court appearance on Tuesday, was booked into jail on a $100,000 cash bond as he awaits his preliminary hearing on April 28.
