WALWORTH COUNTY, WI — A 27-year-old woman was fatally injured Thursday night in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 43 near the Town of Delavan, according to TMJ4.
The collision took place on the southbound lanes near the County Highway F bridge, shortly after 9:15 p.m.
A preliminary investigation by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office shows a 32-year-old driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. At one point, the City of Delavan police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop. Moments later, the wrong-way vehicle collided head-on with a southbound vehicle.
The wrong-way driver, whose vehicle caught fire after the crash, suffered critical injuries. They were removed from the wreckage and rushed to an area trauma center.
The driver of the victim vehicle, a 44-year-old Rockford, Illinois man, sustained minor injuries. Officials confirmed his passenger, a 27-year-old woman also from Rockford, died from her injuries at a hospital.
No other details have been disclosed at this time, but the WCSO said the wrong-way driver may soon face charges.
