WALWORTH COUNTY, WI — Property damage was reported early Friday after a 19-year-old Clinton man crashed his car into a business in the Town of Darien, according to FOX 6 Milwaukee.
The accident occurred at the Whiskey Ranch tavern, off the intersection of Wisconsin State Highway 89 and U.S. Highway 14/Wisconsin State Highway 11, at about 4:45 a.m. Deputies with the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene shortly after.
The male driver, who was uninjured, told officials he had fallen asleep behind the wheel as he approached the intersection while heading southbound on WIS-89. Moments later, he veered into the tavern.
Responding deputies arrived to find his vehicle at rest inside in the building. A gas meter was discovered to have been damaged during the crash, creating a large natural gas leak.
Though no one was in the tavern at the time of the wreck, residents in an apartment above the business had to be evacuated due to potential structural damage. No one in the building was reported hurt.
A section of WIS-89 was shut down for an extended time as crews with We Energies worked to repair the gas leak.
A crash investigation remains ongoing.
