PORTAGE COUNTY, WI — A 71-year-old local man was killed early last Friday, September 30, after a fiery wrong-way collision on Interstate 39 in Stevens Point, reports Wausau Pilot & Review.

The fatal wreck occurred at mile marker 161, near Reserve Street North and north of SentryWorld Golf Course. It was first reported shortly before 12:30 a.m.

Officials said the man was behind the wheel of an SUV traveling northbound in on the southbound side when he collided with an oncoming semi tractor trailer. The impact of the crash sent both vehicles into the median, where the SUV caught fire.

Investigators said the driver of the SUV, who was pinned in the wreckage, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the semi, a 54-year-old De Pere resident, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

No further details have been shared, but an investigation assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol was in progress.
