MANITOWOC COUNTY, WI — One person was hospitalized Wednesday evening after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 43 near northwest Manitowoc, reports NBC26.
The accident impacted the northbound lanes just south of Exit 152 to County Road JJ. Deputies with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, along with EMS personnel, responded to the scene at about 6:47 p.m.
According to officials, a 2020 Ford pickup truck was towing an enclosed trailer northbound when, for reasons still unclear, it lost control and traveled into the east ditch before jackknifing. A driver in a 2007 Freightliner semi-tractor that was traveling northbound behind the pickup also lost control and jackknifed their semi, which came to rest partially in the median and blocking most northbound lanes.
Moments later, 25-year-old Marinette woman crashed her Nissan Versa into the semi-trailer. She was transported to Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening.
Officials said a Lamers charter bus also hit the semi-trailer, but no passengers were on board the bus at the time, and no injuries to the driver were reported.
All northbound lanes were closed during the response, forcing traffic to detour off the interstate and onto U.S. Highway 151.
According to the sheriff’s office, a FedEx box truck and a straight truck from another incident were also removed from the median during the crash clearance.
An investigation was underway, but authorities have determined that speed, poor visibility, and road conditions contributed to the wrecks.
