MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — Three people died Tuesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash that injured three others on North Mayfair Road in Wauwatosa, reports WISN.
The fatal collision took place at the intersection with Wisconsin Avenue. It was first reported by WISN at around 1:37 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates a Department of Public Works truck was initially involved in a more minor wreck at the intersection with West Watertown Plank Road. The DPW truck then proceeded southbound on Mayfair Road and crashed into multiple vehicles that were stopped at Wisconsin Avenue, causing some of the vehicles to catch fire.
Two people in two cars were pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials. The driver of the DPW truck, a DPW employee, also died from her injuries.
Of the three others reported injured, two patients were transported to an area hospital.
A section of Mayfair Road between Watertown Plank Road and Wisconsin Avenue was shut down for several hours during the response. By 5:00 p.m., all lanes had reopened.
An investigation into the cause of the wreck remains ongoing, but speed is believed to have been a factor. Wauwatosa Police are working to determine whether the DPW truck driver suffered a medical emergency at the time.
