MILWAUKEE, WI — A 28-year-old man died early Tuesday after his vehicle struck a pole while he was fleeing from police in northwest Milwaukee, reports TMJ4.
Milwaukee Police said the events unfolded near West Atkinson Street and West Congress Street at about 1:15 a.m.
An early investigation indicates MPD officers tried to pull over a driver after observing his vehicle speeding in the area. The driver refused to stop and sped away, prompting a pursuit. Authorities said the chase was ended shortly after when it began to reach high speeds.
The fleeing driver later crashed into a light pole at North 32nd Street and West Glendale Avenue. Moments after the wreck, the driver was able to exit his vehicle and run away from the scene on foot. A nearby resident later found the man, who had collapsed from his crash injuries.
Officers and medical assistance were called, but the man succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
MPD noted a firearm and narcotics were recovered from the vehicle. An investigation remains ongoing.
