MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — Two people were able to get to safety moments before their car was hit by an Amtrak train Saturday afternoon in Brookfield, reports TMJ4.

The accident happened at the intersection of North Avenue and Pilgrim Road, some time after 5:00 p.m.

Local police said two people were in the car, which was traveling westbound on North Avenue. The driver appeared to make the mistake of turning onto the railroad tracks a little east of Pilgrim Road, causing the vehicle to become stuck.

Both the driver and their passenger fled from the car before it was ultimately struck by a westbound Amtrak train.

Neither the driver nor their passenger were injured, confirmed officials.

The Amtrak train, which had left Chicago earlier in the evening, was carrying 214 passengers and crew members on board, but no injuries were reported.

An investigation into the incident remains in progress.
