News: Person killed as car crashes into Fox River in downtown Green Bay

BROWN COUNTY, WI — One person died Saturday night after a vehicle crashed into the Fox River in downtown Green Bay, according to NBC26.

Green Bay Police said the fatal accident occurred on a span of U.S. Highway 141 (Main Street) that runs across the Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge (Dousman Street Bridge). Officers were dispatched to the scene shortly before 7:00 p.m.

Details remain limited, but witnesses told authorities a black passenger car with a person inside traveled off the bridge and into the river.

At around 11:00 p.m., Green Bay Metro Fire Department crews and the the GBPD’s dive team were able to recover both the vehicle and the victim’s body from the water. No identifying information has been disclosed as of this writing, but an autopsy by the Brown County medical examiner was being scheduled.

The bridge was shut down during the emergency response but was reopened to the public at about 11:30 p.m.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office also joined local agencies at the scene.
