MILWAUKEE, WI — Newly released surveillance footage shows the driver of a garbage truck was responsible for a crash Monday morning that derailed a streetcar in downtown Milwaukee, reports TMJ4.

The incident occurred at the corner of North Milwaukee Street and East Wells Street and was reported at around 6:30 a.m.

The video, captured and shared by the nearby Colby Abbot Building, shows a The Hop streetcar entering the intersection on a green light. Moments later, the streetcar is hit by the garbage truck, indicating the second vehicle failed to stop at a red light.

Authorities said the impact of the crash derailed the streetcar, causing service to be suspended for multiple hours Monday. The conductor, who was on board at the time of the event, was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for injuries. On Tuesday, the victim was released from the hospital to continue recovering at home.

By now, The Hop streetcar service has resumed service.

The Federal Transit Administration and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are conducting a joint investigation, due to the Milwaukee streetcar system’s status as a federal rail transit agency. Milwaukee Police and the Department of Public Works is also conducting a separate investigation.
