MILWAUKEE, WI — A private garbage truck and a The Hop streetcar collided Monday morning, shutting down streetcar service and compounding delays in downtown Milwaukee, reports TMJ4.

The incident occurred at the intersection of North Milwaukee Street and East Wells Street, at about 6:30 a.m.

An early investigation by the Milwaukee Department of Public Works indicates the driver of a garbage truck hit the streetcar, sending it into a traffic light. Photos taken at the scene suggest the car was derailed in the impact.

Authorities said no passengers were riding the streetcar at the time, but the conductor was on board. First responders transported the victim to a local hospital for an evaluation. No injuries have been confirmed at this time.

According to DPW, due to the location of the wreck, all streetcar service is expected to remain closed indefinitely. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office warned of multiple ramp shutdowns at the nearby Stadium Interchange due to weather conditions and crashes.
