KENOSHA COUNTY, WI — A 27-year-old Kenosha woman was taken into custody Wednesday evening after a crash near the village of Somers that injured herself and two young children, reports CBS58.

The collision occurred in the 400 block of the highway (Sheridan Road), shortly after 6:00 p.m.

A preliminary investigation shows the woman was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound at high speeds. At one point, the female driver suddenly swerved to avoid a crash with a vehicle ahead, causing the Jeep to run off the roadway and hit a tree.

According to deputies with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, the child passengers, ages 2 and 7, were not properly secured in seat belts at the time of the crash and were injured. Both children and the driver were taken to a local hospital, but the 7-year-old later had to be transferred to Children’s Wisconsin with injuries considered life-threatening.

The KCSO confirmed the female driver was place under custody after displaying signs of intoxication. She faces multiple charges, including “OWI with passengers under 16 causing injury, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, and knowingly operating a motor vehicle while suspended, causing great bodily harm.”
