MANITOWOC COUNTY, WI — A 32-year-old Green Bay man has been identified as the driver who died last Friday night after crashing his car off the 10th Street Bridge in downtown Manitowoc, reports NBC26.
The fatal crash happened near the intersection with Maritime Drive on November 4 at around 8:00 p.m.
Witnesses told Manitowoc Police they saw the victim’s vehicle stopped at a red light at the intersection moments before. As the light turned green, the vehicle was seen traveling into the intersection and onto southbound North 10 Street at a normal speed. While turning, the vehicle then jumped a curb and crashed down the embankment before entering the Manitowoc River.
Multiple emergency crews, including the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and crews with the DNR (Department of Natural Resources), responded to the scene to locate the submerged vehicle. Crews worked until they were prompted to stop at around midnight due to concerns about weather conditions.
On the following morning, authorities were able to recover the vehicle and the body of the male driver.
It remains unclear at this time what caused the crash, but an investigation was underway. At this time, police said the bridge and recent two-way traffic change in the area are not considered factors.
