WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI — A man in his 60s died late Thursday afternoon after an Amtrak train struck a vehicle in northwest Brookfield, reports TMJ4.

Brookfield police, fire crews, and multiple other area agencies responded to the scene on North Brookfield Road near River Road at about 5:00 p.m.

An early investigation indicates the man had driven his car around the train crossing gates. Amtrak officials said the vehicle was on the tracks when it was hit by Empire Builder Train 7, which had departed from Chicago for Seattle.

The driver of the car died from his injuries at the scene, confirmed authorities.

Amtrak said none of the 183 passengers and crew members on board were reported hurt.

Due to damage to company property, the train crossing at the intersection was projected to remain closed for multiple days. Motorists were asked to use Barker Road or Calhoun Road instead.
