MILWAUKEE, WI — Three people died Thursday evening after a vehicle crashed off the 16th Street viaduct during a police pursuit in Milwaukee, reports TMJ4.

The Milwaukee Police Department said officers initially tried to pull over a Toyota Avalon near 22nd and Mineral after witnessing its occupants engaging in an apparent drug deal.

According to authorities, the driver in the Avalon sped recklessly away from officers, prompting a chase. About a minute later, the suspect vehicle was seen traveling across the 16th Street viaduct, where it veered past the center line and began to exit the roadway.

Investigators said the car hit an 18-year-old female pedestrian as it crossed the sidewalk. It then went through the safety fence and crashed over the bridge and onto the ground below, where it burst into flames.

Despite life-saving measures from responding officers, all three of the vehicle’s adult male occupants died from their injuries at the scene. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed two of the men were aged 34 and 44.

The pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Officials said sections of the 16th and Canal intersection was blocked off during the response and investigation.
