OZAUKEE COUNTY, WI — Two people died Thursday evening after a fiery crash involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 43 near Belgium, according to TMJ4.

Deputies with the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene south of Sandy Beach Road at about 6:30 p.m.

An early investigation indicates a semi-truck was traveling northbound when, for reasons still unknown, its driver veered off the roadway. The semi then entered the southbound lane, where it hit a second semi-truck.

Witnesses said the impact of the crash caused at least one semi to catch fire and become engulfed in flames as its tires exploded.

Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials.

A section of I-43 between Exit 100 (Port Washington) and Exit 107 (Belgium) was blocked in both directions as crews worked the scene. Motorists were asked to detour around the area.

No further information has been shared at this time.
