WASHINGTON COUNTY, WI — A man was hospitalized Tuesday morning after crashing his vehicle into a train car on County Road DW near the Town of Addison, reports FOX6 Milwaukee.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the accident happened on the Canadian (CN) Railway just east of Ohio Road North.
An early investigation indicates one male driver was initially stopped at the crossing when he spotted the victim’s vehicle, which was approaching him from behind at a high rate of speed. The male driver of the approaching swerved to the right of the roadway toward a gravel ditch and proceeded east. Officials said while the moving vehicle avoided rear-ending the stopped vehicle, it hit one of the last cars of a train heading northbound.
CN officials stopped the train after being notified of the collision.
The driver and sole occupant of the wrecked vehicle was able to self-extricate before the sheriff’s office arrived. He was transported to an area hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
An investigation was underway, but authorities said a high rate of speed under dense fog contributed to the crash. The railway’s warning lights and stop arm were found to have been functional at the incident.
