MARQUETTE COUNTY, WI — Three children and five adults were injured Sunday afternoon in a crash involving five vehicles on Interstate 39 near Poynette, according to NBC15.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred near mile marker 102, north of Madison.
An early investigation shows one driver in a northbound vehicle lost control and flipped over the median, striking an oncoming vehicle in the southbound side. The initial crash prompted a driver in a semi-tractor trailer to slow down in the northbound lane, causing them to be rear-ended by another vehicle. Moments later, the vehicle that struck the truck was also hit from behind.
Officials said a 28-year-old woman and her three juvenile passengers all suffered minor injuries and were taken to Portage Hospital.
A 61-year-old male driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Madison hospital. Three other occupants in his car sustained minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to a Portage hospital.
At this time, no details have been shared regarding the cause of the initial crash.
An investigation by the MCSO and the Wisconsin State Patrol was underway.
