WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI — A Winnebago County Highway Department employee was airlifted to a hospital Thursday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle in east Winneconne, reports NBC26.

The incident occurred in a construction zone on U.S. Highway 45 just north of Wisconsin Highway 116 at around 1:18 p.m.

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, multiple WCHD employees were at work in a marked area that had been reduced to a single traffic lane.

As traffic in the open left travel lane slowed in the zone, a flatbed semi tractor-trailer rear-ended a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was also traveling in the lane. The impact of the crash sent the pickup into the work zone, where it then struck the victim while they were working.

Officials said the victim suffered serious injuries and was flown to a nearby hospital. No updates on their condition has been released at this time.

The driver of the Silverado sustained minor injuries, but it was unclear whether they had to be hospitalized. No injuries to the semi driver were reported.

US-45 northbound was shut down in the area as authorities investigated. Drivers were forced to divert to WIS-116, causing heavy delays.
