The fatal incident occurred in the area of County Highway T and Boulder Lane at about 9:07 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the suspect was operating the UTV when he accelerated, causing his passenger, a 56-year-old Illinois man, to be thrown from the cargo area of the vehicle.
Officials said the victim, who had been riding backwards on the UTV, struck the back of his head on the pavement and suffered critical injuries. He was transported to a hospital in Antigo where he later died.
The suspect, a resident of Waukesha, has since been charged with “homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.”
After the crash, the suspect admitted to responding officers he had two mixed drinks in the hour prior. An early breath test showed his blood alcohol level to have been at .133%
