MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — A city garbage truck caught fire Thursday in Wauwatosa due to an improper disposal of hazardous waste, according to FOX6 Milwaukee.
Wauwatosa Fire Department said crews responded to the scene along a waste collection route.
Authorities said the driver of the truck smelled smoke and immediately rushed to a safe area to dispose of the vehicle’s load.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, and no injuries or vehicle damage were reported.
The event prompted a message from the department reminding the public not to discard “combustible items, hazardous waste or hot items like fireplace ashes” into their garbage containers.
