MILWAUKEE, WI — A 22-year-old man crashed a stolen MPD squad car into another vehicle Thursday night after firing multiple gunshots at an officer near Marquette University in downtown Milwaukee, reports CBS58.

The collision occurred near the corner of North 17th Street and West Clybourn Street shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Milwaukee Police Department said the events unfolded when an officer conducted a welfare check on the suspect, who had appeared to be slumped over in a car. The suspect then pointed a firearm at the officer and an exchange of gunfire ensued before the suspect fled the scene in the squad car.

Shortly after, the suspect collided with another driver and attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by other officers a short distance away.

Authorities said the injured officer, a 26-year-old man, suffered three gunshot wounds and was rushed to Froedtert Hospital, but is expected to survive.

The suspect, a 22-year-old man, was taken into custody and also hospitalized for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

It was unclear whether or not anyone in the victim vehicle was injured.
